S2 – E9 – Italian Road Trip Day 9 – Lucca

by hagerini

We are continuing our journey to Lucca, a Tuscan city 20 km northeast from Pisa. A unique characteristic is the still fully preserved 4 kilometer long medieval wall with only 6 gates, which is enough wide to walk on it around the old city center. Inside the city walls it’s very quiet, there are hardly no cars and you will see most people travelling by bike. In the old town we discover the numerous churches, towers, renaissance palaces and the “Piazza Anfiteatro”, built on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater. Another special building is the birdhouse of Giacomo Puccini, the composer of “Tosca” and “La Bohème” some of the most famous operas in the world.
